Practical Update

We appreciate how much the cancellation of our exams has affected learners and we are working hard on solutions to ensure learners can gain their qualifications at the earliest opportunity.

However, on the basis of official and local advice due to COVID-19, we have made the decision to cancel all Practical exams in Macau until further notice. This decision affects all 2020 bookings for Graded Music Exams, ARSM, Diploma, Choral Singing and Ensemble exams, but does not currently affect any bookings for Music Theory exams. Following this decision, we will process 100% refunds for all existing Practical exam bookings and our Representatives will provide further guidance in due course.

We are sorry for the impact on teachers and candidates and thank you for your loyalty and support while these restrictions remain in place. We are continuing to review when live Practical exams can resume in Macau and will offer them again at the earliest possible opportunity.

Our new remotely-assessed Performance Grades provide an alternative progression route for students during this period of disruption. The Performance Grades are equivalent to our Practical Grades in demand, recognition and value. They are based on the same repertoire and syllabuses, assessment criteria and quality assurance measures as our existing exams and will be assessed by the same highly trained examiners. Booking will open in Macau before the end of the year and you can record your video submission any time from now on. Find out more here.

We have made annual charitable donations to support the work of our four associated Royal Schools for many years and have recently introduced scholarships at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

We provide scholarships and bursaries to outstanding students at the colleges, with more than 70 scholars benefiting from ABRSM funding each year.

At each Royal School in any one academic year ABRSM supports the following scholars:

  • 1 junior
  • 4 UK undergraduates
  • 2 UK postgraduates
  • 4 EU undergraduates
  • 2 EU postgraduates
  • 4 international undergraduates
  • 2 international postgraduates

We also support 2 junior and 5 undergraduates at the RWCMD each year.

Our Royal Schools of Music partners

Royal Academy of Music

The Royal Academy of Music, based in London, trains nearly 700 students from over 50 countries in over 20 musical disciplines.

ABRSM’s annual donation to the Academy supports a number of individual scholars but also supports outreach projects such as ‘Open Academy’ – a programme which reaches out to over 2,000 participants in schools, hospitals and respite centres throughout London. ABRSM also supports the Academy’s outstanding calendar of performances throughout the year.

Royal College of Music

The Royal College of Music in London’s South Kensington is a world-leading music conservatoire with a prestigious history and contemporary outlook.

Founded in 1882, the RCM is home to around 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 60 countries, who are taught in a dynamic and nurturing environment and leave the College to become the outstanding performers, conductors and composers of the future.

In the 2016 QS World University Rankings the RCM was ranked the top conservatoire in the United Kingdom for Performing Arts and joint third across all Performing Arts institutions worldwide

ABRSM’s financial contribution to the RCM provides vital student support through the College’s extensive scholarships programme and its pioneering professional development hub, the Creative Careers Centre.

Royal Northern College of Music

The Royal Northern College of Music, formed in 1973 from the merger of the Royal Manchester College of Music with the Northern School of Music, has, for many years, been the first choice institution for a large number of aspiring professional musicians from the UK and overseas.

ABRSM’s annual donations have enabled the RNCM to develop significant initiatives over the years that directly benefit students and enhance their employability.

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is Scotland's national centre of professional vocational training in performance arts based in Glasgow.

ABRSM’s donations to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland reap enormous rewards in terms of widening opportunities to reach the greatest number of potential conservatoire entrants.
