Practical Update

We appreciate how much the cancellation of our exams has affected learners and we are working hard on solutions to ensure learners can gain their qualifications at the earliest opportunity.

However, on the basis of official and local advice due to COVID-19, we have made the decision to cancel all Practical exams in Macau until further notice. This decision affects all 2020 bookings for Graded Music Exams, ARSM, Diploma, Choral Singing and Ensemble exams, but does not currently affect any bookings for Music Theory exams. Following this decision, we will process 100% refunds for all existing Practical exam bookings and our Representatives will provide further guidance in due course.

We are sorry for the impact on teachers and candidates and thank you for your loyalty and support while these restrictions remain in place. We are continuing to review when live Practical exams can resume in Macau and will offer them again at the earliest possible opportunity.

Our new remotely-assessed Performance Grades provide an alternative progression route for students during this period of disruption. The Performance Grades are equivalent to our Practical Grades in demand, recognition and value. They are based on the same repertoire and syllabuses, assessment criteria and quality assurance measures as our existing exams and will be assessed by the same highly trained examiners. Booking will open in Macau before the end of the year and you can record your video submission any time from now on. Find out more here.

ABRSM

ABRSM is the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music, delivering over 650000 music exams and assessments every year in 93 countries.

To mark the 1st birthday of our Guitar Syllabus, we offered one lucky person the chance to win a signed Alhambra guitar, courtesy of the London Guitar Studio. The Alhambra 4P guitar has been signed by legendary classical guitarists John Williams, Milos Karadaglić, Gary Ryan, Xuefei Yang, Laura Snowden and the Vida Quartet.

Applicants could either nominate themselves or someone they know. We asked applicants to explain in up to 300 words why they deserved to win the guitar. We wanted to hear about someone who has shown dedication to learning guitar while perhaps not having the same opportunities as their peers.

Dawn submitted an application on behalf of her son, ‘My son has taken up guitar in his late teens during a difficult time and music has really helped him cope, and express himself through many desperate times. This in turn has sparked an interest in music and opened up a new world to him. Winning this guitar has shown him good things do happen and I believe he is truly deserving to win this prize.’

Fellow judge and Guitarist Gary Ryan said: ‘This was a great opportunity for a talented individual with potential who loves playing the guitar. It also came with the added bonus of being signed by many of the guitar world’s top players! Congratulations to Dawn and Harvey, it was truly deserved.

We’re really delighted to be awarding this guitar to a worthy winner. We look forward to hearing from Harvey in the future to see how his musical journey continues.
