Practical Update

We appreciate how much the cancellation of our exams has affected learners and we are working hard on solutions to ensure learners can gain their qualifications at the earliest opportunity.

However, on the basis of official and local advice due to COVID-19, we have made the decision to cancel all Practical exams in Macau until further notice. This decision affects all 2020 bookings for Graded Music Exams, ARSM, Diploma, Choral Singing and Ensemble exams, but does not currently affect any bookings for Music Theory exams. Following this decision, we will process 100% refunds for all existing Practical exam bookings and our Representatives will provide further guidance in due course.

We are sorry for the impact on teachers and candidates and thank you for your loyalty and support while these restrictions remain in place. We are continuing to review when live Practical exams can resume in Macau and will offer them again at the earliest possible opportunity.

Our new remotely-assessed Performance Grades provide an alternative progression route for students during this period of disruption. The Performance Grades are equivalent to our Practical Grades in demand, recognition and value. They are based on the same repertoire and syllabuses, assessment criteria and quality assurance measures as our existing exams and will be assessed by the same highly trained examiners. Booking will open in Macau before the end of the year and you can record your video submission any time from now on. Find out more here.

Welcome to Saxophone Practice Partner

Alto Saxophone Practice Partner is a simple way to make practising pieces for your ABRSM exam more musical, enjoyable and fun. It is useful for anyone learning or teaching pieces from the ABRSM Alto Saxophone Exam Pieces 2018–2021 at Grades 1–5.

What is Saxophone Practice Partner?

Violin Practice Partner

It’s a practice tool that provides access to enhanced recordings of Alto Saxophone Exam Pieces. You can use the app to practise with the piano accompaniment or alto saxophone part in isolation, in addition to the duo ensemble recording. Using Alto Saxophone Practice Partner also helps slow practice, while retaining the musicality of the recorded performance. It's as if you’re practising with your own personal alto saxophone partner!

Alto Saxophone Practice Partner is available for iOS and Android™ devices in both smartphone and tablet versions, from iTunes and Google Play. The app comes with one example piece from Grade 4 of Saxophone Exam Pieces 2018–2021, with in-app purchases available for individual pieces or selections for each grade.

How can I use Saxophone Practice Partner?

Alto Saxophone Practice Partner lets you play along with real musicians’ performances, exactly as recorded or at a reduced tempo. The app will help you to:

  • Become familiar with the accompaniment and understand how the solo line fits with the piano part for more secure performances
  • Slow down or speed up the music to a tempo that suits you, for slow careful practice.
  • Listen closely to the alto saxophone in isolation to hear every detail of the expert performance.
  • Repeat tricky passages by setting loops around them.
