General guidelines

ABRSM endeavours to make its assessments accessible to all candidates, regardless of sensory impairment or learning difficulty. It should be understood, however, that ABRSM’s policy does not make any concessions in terms of assessing standards, but rather we try to alter the administration of our assessments or, occasionally, to provide an alternative test or mode of assessment, in line with the particular needs of the candidate.


When entering candidates for a Medal, you will be asked to indicate any sensory impairment, learning difficulty or particular physical need using a series of tick boxes. It is important that we are informed of all candidates’ needs for our moderation purposes, as the administration of the assessment may be affected.

Where a candidate requires enlarged or modified Option tests or a Braille Option test, it is assumed that you as the Teacher-Assessor will produce these tests from your usual source after downloading the Option tests in the normal way.

Where a candidate requires extra time, you must obtain an authenticating document or assessment. This should be either from an Educational Psychologist, SEN teacher, GP or specialist, as appropriate. This document must outline the particular needs of the candidate and the likely impact on their Music Medals assessment. Valid documentation must be kept in your files, as ABRSM reserves the right to request this at any time.

Please note that all access details must be indicated for every online entry made.

Candidates with a sensory impairment or learning difficulty should be encouraged to choose the option test which best suits their requirements and strengths. However, it is recognised that extra time may be needed. The following arrangements apply for candidates with a visual impairment or Dyslexia:

Partially sighted candidates will be given an additional 30 seconds preparation time in their chosen option test. Please note that this does not apply in cases where the chosen option test is attempted by ear (Question & answer at Copper level, Make a tune at Copper & Bronze levels, Call & response at all levels), where no additional reading time is required.

It is assumed that Blind candidates will choose the Call and response option, or Make a tune by ear (at Copper and Bronze level). However if the candidate chooses an option that requires the test to be in Braille, Teacher-Assessors are advised to download the option tests as normal and produce a Braille test from their usual source. Please note that where a candidate chooses to read Braille, they will be given an additional 30 seconds preparation time.

Dyslexic candidates will be given an extra 30 seconds preparation time for the chosen option test, except for Call & Response where an immediate response is expected.

If you have a candidate whose needs are not covered by these arrangements, please contact our Access Coordinator, outlining the particular needs of the candidate, and the likely impact on their Music Medal assessment.

Modified stave notation is an alternative to Large Notation for partially sighted candidates. Option tests can be produced to the candidates preferred layout by altering stave sizes, bar lines and text which best suits their requirements and strengths.

Report forms

As the Teacher-Assessor you will need to be aware that although you may be sympathetic to the candidate, no special concession or allowance can be made in assessment, and the performance must be judged in accordance with the standard normally expected for each Medal.


All results for candidates with access needs will be administered in the same way and forwarded to the Teacher-Assessor as soon as possible.

Braille results

In addition to the standard printed copy, Braille certificates can be issued if requested at the time of entry. These certificates are produced by the RNIB and will be forwarded as soon as they are available.
